The reasons given are spam (http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/44029/44029.html), I suspect it may have more to do with $$$$$ :D
Another reason to try Mozilla Thunderbird

Sad day
I have had a Hotmail account since 1996, Bhatia the founder sold it to M$ for a reported ?300million.
Hotmail adds 100,000 new users a day at a cost of $0.85, with Outlook Express you are not viewing their online ads

What Microsoft's trying to do is to fight spam mail the only way it could successfully be fought to win-> i.e. CHARGE for email usage. The ideal way would be to charge a penny per email at each internet relay. If a spammer sends off a zillion emails he'll begin to pay out more than what he'll take in. Natuarally, email virus infected computer "bots" won't be able to randomly send off thousands of spam emails per computer, since they will all get rejected.

Now, that said, Microsoft will try to monopolize on this to make a profit. Well, there are worse ways they could abuse us. This one will be legitimate, though. Sad, since we lose "free" services, but legitimate.

Regards,
Al

I check 4 yahoo accounts (web based) from Outlook 2003 via SMTP (aka POP3 email).
You can do it from most pop email programs (Outlook Express (aka - the program that pioneered email viruses through shotty programming), Outlook, etc)

How to do it
1) sign up for a yahoo account
2) Download yahoopops - http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net
3) Kiss Hotmail goodbye

Oh, BTW, of course it is about money. Hotmail was a great program until Microsoft bought it. I deleted my hotmail account when Microsoft Bought 'em.

I pay 19.95 to get a 2 gig account and the main reason I use yahoo is because I DONT have to use SMTP, not worry about backups, have mail splattered across 3 machines. files all over the place.
By having the bigger yahoo account everythingI need is in the same place, redundant and no storage headaches. Sure if I delete a file i am done but that is the same with any system and yes I back up important mail on a remote server.
To me running outlook thunderbird etc is just a hassle when you dont sit at the same desktop all day...

I use several different accounts. I have hotmail, but use the webmail for it. I have two that link via POP to a single machine; one earthlink with its own POP-like interface on home and web at work and a secure email (www.hushmail.com) that has PGP to sign on the other addresses. Everyone needs a hushmail address.
Plus I've got a bunch I never use. Like this great scroggie@docsboard.com address. Can't ever seem to get it to work.

I have Outlook at work and at home.
My main email computer is at home.

I respond to urgent emails at work, otherwise the rest I do at home.

All I do at work is "Leave a Copy of the Email on the Server".

So that way my computer at home has all the emails.

I put up with the fact that my computer at work doesnt have all my emails.

If you set both computers to "Leave Email on the Server for 7 days", both computers would have all the emails.

I have Outlook Express too, M$ seem to have backed off, the accounts all now work  I was prepared to stop using them if I had to log on webbased for email that is 95% junk, at least it is easy to trash in Outlook, I only stayed with Outlook because of Hotmail accounts.
I will again try to look up instructions on YahooPops

To prevent abuse of the feature, Microsoft will stop making it available to new users of free Hotmail and MSN mail accounts starting Monday. Current users can continue to use the feature but will be asked to become Hotmail subscribers over the coming months. By April next year, the feature will no longer be available for free, Richardson said.
