I am in the market for either an all-in-one or printer+scanner. Any suggestions? I would like to use it to scan data such as labs and radiology reports into files which could then be placed on a CD for portablility, kind of a portable "EMR."

My son has a dell AIO printer model A940 and it works great but it is a single page at a time deal..

I am looking at some scanners than do multiple pages also for another client so I may have some other ideas in a few days..

this one of the front runners (http://www.visioneer.com/Products/flatbed/9450PDF/home.asp)

I own the Visioneer 9450 PDF 25 page scanner/printer and love it. This is my third Visioneer product, ever since their first scanner many years ago. Never had a problem with any of them and the support (software upgrades, etc) has been excellent.

The 9450 does a good job scanning up to 25 pages of 20 weight paper, less if heavier. Just be sure the pages are well aligned in the tray.

Another big plus: PaperPort Deluxe 8 (great desktop organizer software) and full version of Adobe Acrobat.

Printing I would rate as very good. There are better, but this is quite good.

Sorry, mis-leading. The 9450 is a scanner, multi-page. When I referred to printing I was referring to output of scanned images from the 9450. Despite it's claimed resolution something is always lost in translation to print. Visioneer's are good but not the absolute best IMHO.

Buy the software you are going to use first.

Then get the scanner.

Many scanners "do not work very well" with certain software.

Agree with EMRhelp.org

I have a visioneer that sits in a drawer because of XP Pro. I have two Brother MFC 9700 units that have to be used with refurbished W2K pc's because of WIA under XP Pro, and my EMR requires TWAIN interface, and you absolutely need to be able to take the damn thing back if it doesn't work. I had to take back my HP's because they took forever to scan.

We are very happy with our Brother 9700, and they are cheaper now. My wife uses one with Paperport for all our office business paperwork and archiving, running with XP Pro and using the WIA interface.

Right click “My Computer”
Select “Manage”
Click the + Sign at “Service & Applications”
Click “Service”
Scroll down and select “Windows Image Acquisition”
Right click and select “Properties”
Change startup type to “Disable”
Click “Apply” then “Exit”
Restart computer.

this should disable WIA for you and help get your twain on the wight twack..

I'll try this with the Strobe Pro. However, Brother support told me that after XP Pro SP-1 came out that WIA was required and their TWAIN interface was done away with by their firmware upgrade.

Another lesson, if your unit is working well, don't upgrade the firmware, no matter who tells you to do it. It might not work the way you want and there was no way to go back with my Brother MFC's in 2002, per Brother support.

Coming late to this thread, but you can get a brother Intellifax 2820 for under $200 excellent fax and USB printer, a Fujitsu 5120c scanner will scan 2 sided documents, checks, legal size paper in seconds. It can load up to ~30 sheets and make PDF docs, well worth the investment

You will NOT be happy with a low cost scanner or an all-in-one.
I have been using the Fujitsu 4120c now 4120c2.
It is small and efficient. It scans two sides at once - great for EOB's, etc.

Do not cut corners on the scanner if you are going paperless.

PS - It scans Insurance cards and DL's

I scan DL's in color and get a color picture as a bonus.

SCSI ? Are people still using SCSI interfaces?

( my impression is that SCSI was much more reliable than USB )

USB-2 works just fine.

Is the USB 2.0?

I have seen high resolution scanner manufacturers recommend SCSI interfaces as more stable, but my info may be outdated with USB 2.0

I think that may be the 2 in 4120c2.

USB 2.0 has a raw data rate at 480Mbps.

Mine works just fine with USB 1.1 (12Mbps)

You do not want to scan in very high resolution image files anyway because they are not necessary and they bloat the database.
