I found this link that you might be interested in,
http://www.aafp.org/fpm/20010500/33elec.pdf

It is a low cost solution.

I think the entry level EMR is still SOAPWARE (http://www.docs.com/Products/soapware.htm) , can you please give us your experiences of the various packages you are using if any?

Has anyone tried
AmazingCharts (http://www.amazingcharts.com/faq/faqframeset.htm) or EZCharts (http://www.ezmedicaloffice.com/faq.php) which is free but web based?

SOAPWARE has a limit of 2Gb I think, a average sized practice will reach that limit fairly quickly, unless u migrate to ?SQL, which costs a bit more,

Jeff,
I think for entry level, that is somewhat on the expensive side at 1.5k and 200 service contract, do u have anyone using it who can give us their experiences?
SOAPWARE is about 1/3 of that price, how does your product compare?

I've been using my optometry/ophthalmology specific EMR for 35 months now and my database (Access) hasn't been compacted for over a year and the DB is only 95 meg, that's a long way from 2 gig. I store a ton of patient data, not just text (optometry practice with a ton of optical data as well as physical exam data).

2 gig is a HUGE database for a single application, I'd be surprised to see a practice hit that quickly, if ever.

The 2 GB limit in SoapWare needs to be qualified. The 2 GB limit is actually the limit of a MS Access database. SoapWare can be setup using Access and it works just fine. I work with my brother-in-law doctor and I have setup his office network and SoapWare.

In just under two years his pratice has grown to 1400 patients. The size of the database for the patient's charts is 49 MB while the size of the scanned in images database is over 120 MB.

You can see we have room to breathe.

We are running the system on a wireless network with 3 machines. Granted when I designed the system I chose beefy machines and things have been working well.

If you would like additional information you can visit my doc's web site at www.ourfamilydoctor.biz

I use access as my database (similar to soapware). After 5 years its is about 40megabytes. I wouldn't recommend storing your scanned data in access, as that does bloat the database. Still, its unlikely that the average practice will ever reach the 2gigbyte limit., epecially if you're storing text and numbers and not images.

scroogie, what EMR are you using wih Access?

Scroggie

I made my own, I make my own computers, so why not an EMR.

Mike

It runs on Access as the database? What functionality has it got? Do you intend to make it freeware, shareware, vaporware:D or other?
M

Scroggie

It is very functional. Generates great notes that I save as SnapShot files (read only, microsoft's answer to PDF). I track all the relevant stuff, plus HAQ scores, tender and swollen joint counts (Rheumatology).

I don't have a plan at the moment. THe thing about "outing" it is that I would have to answer questions and be tech support.

I may zip it up and throw it out there at some point.

Scroggie

I guess that makes it vaporware and I got ten posts!

Why don't you post it on here for us to beta test it for you, Bigdoc has a spreadsheet on here which I have used for a efw days and made recommendations which he is working on, that may be one way to get it out there, get comments from users, if you are concerned about loosing your intellectual work, you could place some kind of timer, so that every 2 months someone has to get an updated version, that way you retain some control of the beta product, till you are ready to launch if that is your eventual plan, I am sure there are a lot of folks on here that would beta test for u.
My $0.02

I'll work on it next week (gotta take the patient data out and zip it). Its big, like 40megabytes between front end (forms, reports and queries ~10mbytes) and the back end (data tables ~30mbytes).

here's a copy of one of my notes.

Thanks, I will look at it when I get home, they won't let me open an attachment here, what's it's size?

Scroggie

There is a free Access EMR located here:

http://www.accessgp.com/dnlds.htm

I have not tried it.

If anyone does please post some comments.

I have the greatest admiration and respect for guys like this one, who does ot want to get a quck buck out of physicians, is willing to put his work out there for free, I 'm downloading the program, will give my thoughts on it, and pass on suggestions to the author

Scroggie, do you have a web site? I need to start designing the download area, do you guys think it should be open, or for members only for uploading, but a
What format:
Guests can upload & download
Guests can't upload but download
Members can do both?
or should I post a poll?
'not too keen on having guests upload stuff, don't want the RIAA knocking at my door.

Scroggie

Members only I think. Membership has its rewards. Also, wouldn't want our betas spread around the web.

I don't have a web site, probably should start one. Why not add HTML to my list of languages.

Maybe Vegan can upload musical selections . . .just to sample of course.

BigDoc

The site would make a nice place to store the many files I have which I can never find on the 'puter, my headache is some kind of cataloguing system for the files.

I think you can set up Yahoo Messenger for FTP from your hard drive to people you authorize.

That might be the easy way.

I've got a yahoo briefcase, that I may set up for public access. Let me look into that tonight. (can't do it at work).

That would mean leaving some ports open on that computer?

Hal333

Do you have a yahoo account?

We can try it if you want.

Yahoo works through a port, of course, but there is a password system.

Hal, which attachment?

Hal333

There should be a thumbnail of the Yahoo FTP window there. I think it is self-explanitory.

I actually have no need for FTP right now. I wa just trying to be helpful.
