I have designed a spreadsheet that can be used to follow patient's labs, outstanding tests, dictations, consults.
It's provided as is, it's free, no warranties, but I will give support on here if needed

Why not use Access as it will let you do much more with the data, including custom input forms etc?

Not being critical of your choice, just a suggestion.

I don't have Access at work, yes that would certainly have been my first choice

Depending on how you set up your worksheets, you may be able to import things from Excel into Access at a later date. MS Office Pro will have both for a couple hundred dollars.

Keep on plugging!

For those of you without an EMR and on a budget, here is a spreadsheet I am using to follow patients in my practice. I dont have Micro$oft access, I would have designed this in access, but this has been working perfectly for about 4 months now, I have several improvements coming, and do not plan to charge anyone to use it. Feel free to replace your lab book with this spreadsheet, the advantage over the book will become clear very quickly.
Few basic instructions, this workbook uses macros, so you need to have them enabled.

You enter a new patient from Patients menu -> Patients -> Add
You go to the first worksheet where you select the patient from a dropdown menu, and select the patient, date test ordered and details about the test, Saddam for instance has had a PSA and a CBC drawn, I only have his CBC back, and have not informed him yet of the results. When you inform the patient (3 ticks) and you hit archive patient, the entry will be moved to archive, where you can always look to see what labs were done when. The archives worksheet has not got code in it, meaning you can purge it manually if you like.
When you have several patients, you can order by patient name, so you can see all the labs, tests, consult for a particular patient that are still pending before you go in to see the patient.
My worksheet is up to about row 300 with about 200 patient entries, but it still very manageable, I purge it once every 2 weeks, by looking up which patients I may not have informed of their labs (Can come in handy when u have high volumes such as Pap smears) and click on all 3 columns, then purge. If you have any questions, please do post them on here, I will answer them as soon as possible.
Until you are very comfortable using the spreadsheet, get into the habit of printing a copy the 1st worksheet every so often, and please do backup the file on a frequent basis. I do have mine on a server shared drive, my nurse has read-only access to it from her computer.
Enjoy

To get maximum benefit from the worksheet, you need some basic knowlege of Excel, you are able to copy and paste which makes entering patient info quite painless, I'd like to get a feedback from anyone who has tried the worksheet.

ozzie, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

i was trying to work with the xls but I think last time i saved it I did without the macros so i need a clean copy to work from..

1)I added an extra column to the list for EDD. How do I link the calendar that you have to this column

2) I am trying to get "filter" the list by EDDs in the next 60 days. I have tried using the advance filter but its not filtering as it should.

3) If I get that right I will record it as a macro an name it so that I can periodically print out a list of the upcoming deliveries and see what labs are ordered

TBH, I have not looked at this spreadsheet in months, I will see what I can do, unless our other resident experts want to give it a try, it is "Open Source"

When I open the Excel file I get the following message. "Compile error:Automation error"
Shall I ignore it or is this a bug?
Thank you.

I actually got busy with other things (I had to take my boards, and learn MediNotes) I am going to try to get a report out of it in the next week or so. I will llet you know.

I am unable to use the spreadsheet in OfficeMac vX.
I get the same error "Compile error:Automation error" and this shows up

Private Sub Worksheet_BeforeDoubleClick(ByVal Target As Range, Cancel As Boolean)

With Target
If (.Column = colLabsPending Or _
.Column = colLabsBack Or _
.Column = colNotified) Then
If IsEmpty(.Value) Then
.Value = "a"
Else
.Value = ""
End If
.Offset(0, 1).Activate
End If
End With

End Sub

Private Sub Worksheet_SelectionChange(ByVal Target As Range)

Application.CommandBars("Cell").Controls("Insert Date").Enabled = False

If Target.Column = colName Then

If Target.Row = Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row + 1 Then

If Target.Row > 2 Then
Target.Offset(-1, 0).Validation.Delete
End If

With Target.Validation
.Delete
.Add Type:=xlValidateList, _
AlertStyle:=xlValidAlertStop, _
Operator:=xlBetween, _
Formula1:="=patients"
.IgnoreBlank = True
.InCellDropdown = True
.InputTitle = ""
.ErrorTitle = ""
.InputMessage = ""
.ErrorMessage = ""
.ShowInput = True
.ShowError = True
End With

End If

ElseIf Target.Column = colDateOrdered Or Target.Column = colDatePending Then

If Target.Row <= Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp).Row Then

Application.CommandBars("Cell").Controls("Insert Date").Enabled = True

End If

End If

End Sub

Where do I go from here?

Do you have the file available as an Excel version?
Or as an OpenOffice.org version?
I use Macintosh computers exclusively.
I prefer to use OpenOffice.org, but do have an older version of MS Office.
I presume Access is a Windows program. In any case I do not have Access.

what's the value in using an order tracking system that does not intergrate and automatically document the porcess in the patient's chart or record?

If you are running a medical practice get a real EMR!

If you are on a shoestring - like I was three years ago - MediNotes will do the job at a very reasonable price.

MediNotes will download lab results from the major lab providers from the internet directly into the patients record.

You can add a pop-up reminder to any patient to remind you to do things like call them about lab results, call post-op patients, etc.

This is all automatically DOCUMENTED in the EMR.

There are so many advantages to using a full-featured EMR that it just doesn't make sense to rely on homemade add-ons.

Programming is a great hobby but we shouldn't confuse newcomers or mislead them about EMR realities.

Please, I mean no offence to my long-time collegues on the board.

IF you are an employed physician with no decisions re EMR, this is a very useful option, better than the lab-book
