Ok here is the deal..
I am working with some fine folks at www.freemed.org My main function is to assist bringing freemed to the market . I dont do much code etc I have a coder who does that stuff.. I am more interested in the production side of how to bring the product to the market..
My main motive utimately is to feed my wife and kids . and my existing IT practice shifts and will slow down. So it was time for me to reinvent my IT practice..
I looked at a lot of things and figured that the healthcare industry has and will grow
I like open source as it is better for the world as whole. And it allows me to run a social enterprise where I can feed my family and with the extra profits help others feed their families..
I already do a bunch of stuff for non profits already so its not like this is new deal for me..
Knowing Dr's are pretty smart ( logic needs logic to work HEH ) and desperate for technology and less poor than the non profits in general I think it became a perfect mistress..
Then I had to look at the open source options..
Freemed was the best over all and has IMHO more capability than the others around and is more free from a code and power perspective..
Also as freemed has a backend management structure via the freemed foundation in place this will help the product mature and keep all the bits and bytes in a row rather than dogmatical ego power struggles..sigh

The main reason I did not blab to the world about freemed is I am (still) in the process of setting up a server so many docs can play in ther own little area and any bugs will be local to their install..
The installs on the freemed site have some functions disabled.

I want to have each install fully functional for each dr ..
So I / we can do controlled testing and bug hunting..

So play around on the freemed demo ay www.freemed.com and soon in a week or so I will have few demo's setup for all to play on..

enjoy

Thanks Oz, 'preciate the effort by all. Now lets say I want to go live in the future- would it be reasonable to post YOUR preferred server spec and Linux flavor? Will y'all be publishing a ISO/CD for those who wish to install only components needed to build a FreeMed server? For that matter are you going to offer a preconfigured server?

I am working on a basic server spec which will be part of a brochure I guess also..

the iso idea is interesting however the challenge is the work it takes to get it perfect is remarkable (very) and keeping on top of the image is even more remarkable.. Given security updates and changes..

Call me old fashioned or whatever but I prefer to install the way I know as I get to see every step of the way . Building a server should be a defined process rather than a click here yes, yes , no and no thanks don't want to join MSN..

Yes I could build a server ready to roll . thats another option I am looking at ..
probably cost about $3k brand new Dell 3 year next day they come and fix it deal Raid 5 gobs of ram P4. Plug it in and go..

Like the Dell idea, dude. Buy box. Plug box in. Play. Say ahhhhh. Eager to check out yo' server when it's sup. I can give you 4k patients to play with from my database (sans SS# and names) with comma delimited meds, problems and other text fields, roughly 20 K patient notes if it's not some massive HIPPO violation. It's even in your favorite database - MS Access.
