Ozzie has developed with others an Opensource Cross Platform EMR, for those not familiar with the terminology, it is free to use, you only pay for support.
It is available here (http://www.freemed.org/beta_cvs/freemed/)

Mel (or ozzie):

Do you know what comprises the backend- and SQL server?

Funny, I left Ozzie a note earlier tonight asking him about this software that he alluded to. Also asked about SOAPware + Lytec - vs.- SOAPware v5 if it comes out soon. I'm going to open a solo derm practice next summer after my fellowship, and would like to be paperless...and not deal with insurance. Anyone have any thoughts on this program (SOAPware)?
I just found this site, and enjoy dialogue.
Oh, by the way, I'm guessing that everyone must be a lot more computer literate then me.....because I really wasn't understanding how to implement the FreeMed software when I opened the above link.
Best in Health!

 P.S.-will the county medical society be the best place to look to hiring and practice issue? Any advice on hiring the "right" people (accountant, attorney, Insurance broker, malpractice carrier....) the FIRST time?
I'm open to all suggestions for opening a practice. If there is a better place take this "thread" I'm willing to do that as well. I went to all the website that "Bigdoc" offered in an earlier note.
THANKS ALL

Hi Skin doc:

SOAPware is pretty good, but one problem is that once you've added all the addins, you've way over $1000-$2000... basically, you get nickle and dimed to death. My former associate purchased it and never used it. He later went with eClinicalWorks and seems to use it more.

Like Ozzie, I like computers a lot and what I usually suggest is that $1000 should be the maximum up front cost that any doc should have to pay. Remember- the software's lifespan is short, and every 1-2 years you'll have to pay "upgrade" prices; also- technical support costs are significant. One aafp.com article mentioned that a $20000.00 software will usually end up costing a total of about $250000.00 over the next 5 years. This is truely outrageous!

You should definitely check out free software... ozzie's open source software is great, and with the MySQL backend, well, check it out. Unfortunately, physicians relate inexpensive or "free" software with poor quality- this is far from reality. The other thing that I've seen is that folks think that the more they pay, the better off they are in terms of quality or stability. Not true...

Al

Not sure which hat Al pulled out the $1k figure but we shall move on.. LOL
Just some facts..
EMR systems are (or should not be about ) how easy it is for users to install. As easy as it is to install, becomes as easy as it is to remove, uninstall and stuff up..

You should have a dedicated local server which should be backed up to an internet based server.

Going paperless is more so a goal than a reality at the start. But a great goal..

No insurance is a noble idea and save a lot of hassles paper /software wise.. is that a reality tho ???
Open source does not have any license fees and or user fees etc. Upgrades are free..
However that does not mean its free as in everything .. I don't work for free nor does my ISP LOL

In a few days I will have the test server built out and I will have a couple of open source EMR's up. You can look and if you want to play I will make you a private play area. The private area cost $ 35 a month /EMR to play so I can defray my costs..

I think it is great to see all of the options opening up for free based EMR's (whether just free, or full blown OpenSource).

With the growing number of free EMR applications - we are going to piss off some of the corporate big players - so make sure you keep all of yout i's dotted and t's crossed.

On Ozzie's EMR project, (I guess this is more to Ozzie), make sure if they use real data that you support SSL... all you need is for some company to say it violates HIPAA :(.

I've got a lot of experience with HIPAA (although I am no lawyer) and I will volunteer any information I can to help out in regards to that.

Once a year I have to be re-certified in the HIPAA Privacy Act for my real job. (its coming up again, how time flies!)

Ozz, I thought SSH and Telnet had security issues?

telnet has security issues but SSH fixes that I am talking about SSH2..

Not going even touch the diff between SSH V1 V2 etc..
Lets just say its strong enough for the stock market and banking world and meets govt standards..
kinda moot tho when docs think nothing of making notes in word on a windows 98 machine LOL.
Apart from all that only admins should have SSH access anyhow.. ((99.9 % stuff I would do as an linux admin woudl not touch the data anyhow ))
